Why Your Coffee Isn’t Working Anymore

3. Iron: The Heavy Legs Syndrome

This is the classic “I feel like I’m walking through mud” deficiency. While technically a mineral, iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder in the world.

When iron is low, your body struggles to produce hemoglobin. This is the protein in red blood cells that literally carries the energy (oxygen) to your brain and toes. No oxygen means no spark.

The Critical Distinction:
You might be tired because your iron stores (Ferritin) are low, even if your red blood cell count is technically “normal.” Most doctors only look for anemia, not “sub-optimal” iron levels.

Symptoms:

  • Pale skin or dark circles under your eyes.

  • Craving ice or dirt (a condition called Pica).

  • Shortness of breath even when sitting.

How to fix it:
Do not take iron with coffee or tea—the tannins block absorption. Instead, take it on an empty stomach with Vitamin C (like a glass of orange juice) to boost uptake.
